Chapter 13
ICE CRUNCHED beneath my Jeepâs tires as James navigated the last bend in my driveway, bringing us in view of the house. The snow that had been relegated to shadowy patches in the city covered my property in a crusted layer of white. Frozen footprints dotted the landscape, marking the paths I most often tread like pockmarks. Daylight had faded as we wound our way up Boulder Canyon, but the faint light of the crescent moon reflected off the snow to create a bluish glow over the land.
James pulled the Jeep into its usual spot and cut the engine. Silence fell over us, as muffling as the blanket of snow muting the forest. Emma had stayed behind. Once Luke was done with the werewolves, she wanted to talk to him about the strange new vision Shedraziel had awoken in her and the possibility of her magic returning. The idea that someone whoâd suffered a burnout could get their magic back. . . . I shook my head and looked at my house. The front window was aglow, but the curtains were drawn, so I couldnât see in. Chase and Zeraldi would be insideâanother issue to deal with before reaching my bed. I sighed and pushed the button to release my seat belt.
âWe can talk to Chase in the morning.â Jamesâs words were startlingly loud in the quiet.
I shook my head. âWe donât know how much time we have.â
James circled the Jeep before I got my door open. He helped me down, taking the weight off my injured leg, and led me to the house.
When he opened the door, warm air rushed into the night, stirring my hair. I paused on the threshold. It had been almost exactly a day in the mortal realm since Iâd left, but so much had happened. I closed my eyes, thinking about my time in California and the Undine Realm, marveling at the impossibilities magic made possible. James closed the door behind us, sealing out the cold.
ââBout time.â
I opened my eyes.
Chase peeked over the back of the couch. One bare foot was visible on the armrest. âGuess you had quite the mess to clean up.â
I looked around. âWhereâs Zeraldi?â
He tipped his head toward the hallway that led to the back rooms. âPut her to bed. She should be right as rain when she wakes up.â
I pictured the gaping holes Iâd seen when she was lying on the sidewalk and looked down at my bandaged leg. My fae healing would have me walking normally soon enough if I managed to get some proper food and rest. I looked at the first door in the hallway. My bedroom. I could almost hear the call of my mattress as though it, too, were a siren luring me in.
It was an effort to drag my gaze away and settle it back on Chase. âHowâd your mission go?â
James half carried me to an armchair. Once I was settled, he moved to the kitchen and opened the fridge.
I
